Saturday, February 14, 2009 Noon - OUR HOSPITALITY (1923)
Set against the drama of an age-old feud between two families, Buster Keaton's ingenious take on Romeo and Juliet is a laugh-out-loud parody of Southern hospitality, circa 1830. Upon learning he's inherited the ancestral estate, Buster takes the first train home to reclaim his heritage. Soon he's courting a sweetheart and dodging her family's bullets. Buster's daredevil rescue attempt above a waterfall is one of the all-time great movie stunts.
Live piano accompaniment by PHILIP CARLI
Directed by John G. Blystone & Buster Keaton Starring: Buster Keaton, Joe Roberts, Ralph Bushman, Craig Ward, Buster Keaton Jr. (1 year old) 35mm Print Source: DourisCorporation
Movie stardom gets a gleeful once-over in this madcap slapstick farce from Russia. Goga is a brash young ticket-taker smitten by aspiring actress Dusia, but she only has eyes for movie idols like Douglas Fairbanks. Goga decides to become a famous screen star himself, starting with a stunt man job at a movie studio. But when Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford arrive on a promotional tour, (with rare footage of the Hollywood couple which only exists in this film!) Goga gets all the fame he could ever want - at his own peril!
Noted for his various characters, including The Spanish Senora, The Gendarme, and The Tax Collector, his most popular routine was his amazing Big Boot dance, which involved a pair of 28-inch boots. This act was preserved on film in 1900 by pioneering director Alice Guy. He was also popular as a pantomime dame; in one season he appeared with Marie Lloyd and Dan Leno also in the cast.

Harry was born at Cudham, now in the London Borough of Bromley, one of fifteen children to the landlord of the Blacksmith's Arms. He made his first stage appearance at the age of twelve at Rosherville Gardens, Gravesend. Anyone stout at that time earned the nickname of Tich (referring to the claimant in the Tichbourne Case), so Harry, only 4ft 6in (1.37m) in height became Little Tich.

He performed internationally, and at the age of 42 was made an officer of the French Academy, for his performances at the Folies Bergere. His final performance was at the London Alhambra Theatre in 1927, with Jack Hylton's Band, and he died at Hendon after a long illness in 1928.

He was a polydactyl, having five fingers and thumb on each hand, and six toes on both feet. Mementoes of his life are still preserved at the public house which was his place of birth.Alice Guy Jr.http://www.blogger.com/profile/15119742864074734732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1367099517602410110.post-12820103713497978212008-08-31T07:25:00.000-07:002009-03-02T05:50:10.336-08:00Festival du film muet de Pordenone<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 328px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_27SfK27aNNQ/SavjzuihgWI/AAAAAAAAGVM/Sth4fWNDpaI/s400/aaaa-festival-Pordenone-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308587063591928162" />

Hanno scritto sulle Giornate / About the Pordenone Festival

Crazy Rays and Scattered Shadows – Lokke Heiss (Silent Era, June 2008)

The world’s leading international silent-film festival, Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, presented annually in northern Italy, is still going strong after more than a quarter century. The 26th edition of the festival in October 2007 marked a significant milestone: this was the year the festival returned to its original home in the city of Pordenone. Because of the demolition of the Cinema Verdi, the Pordenone theater that had originally housed the screenings, and delays in construction of a new theater to take its place, the festival had temporarily relocated to nearby Sacile for the previous eight years. But in 2007, with the erection of a new Verdi on the site of the old and the resolution of lingering structural issues, the Giornate returned to Pordenone. It was a triumphant homecoming. – J.B. Kaufman (Classic Images, no. 392, Feb. 2008)

Of all the intertitles appearing on screen during the 26th edtion of le Giornate del Cinema Muto, none raised a more knowing laugh than the warning in The Golden Road to Health and Beauty, the English version of a German physical-culture film from the mid-1920s: "Constant sitting is very bad for the body." Just so – especially for a festival that keeps you glued to your seat before celluloid from 9am to past midnight.
Back in its original base of Pordenone in the impractical new Teatro Communale (half ocean liner, half Moby Dick), Italy's prestigious showcase for silent cinema did a fair amount to make the pains bearable. – Geoff Brown (Sight & Sound, Dec. 2007)

– Sergio Grmek Germani (Il Manifesto, 16.10.2007)

Tired of movies looking like videogames rather than celluloid projections of men and women? Come to the Pordenone Silent Film Fest in northern Italy, now in its 26th year. The gold standard for silent film presentation, complemented by the world's finest musical accompanists, Pordenone is the autumn destination for programmers, academics and enthusiasts from around the globe. - Variety Staff ("50 Unmissable Film Festivals", Variety.com, 7 Sept. 2007)

[08.07.2008]

La Cineteca del Friuli | Le Giornate del Cinema MutoAlice Guy Jr.http://www.blogger.com/profile/15119742864074734732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1367099517602410110.post-33023269452232637232008-08-31T07:12:00.000-07:002008-08-31T07:19:24.429-07:00"Festival du film muet d'Argence"<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_27SfK27aNNQ/SLqoJ5bF7WI/AAAAAAAABt4/w_eT4arDEKI/s400/aaa-solax-3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240686004385738082" />

18 19 20 juillet 2008 "FESTIVAL DU FILM MUET D'ARGENCE"

Cycle Harold Lloyd l Projections l Accompagnement l Intervenants l Organisation
